Artificial Turf for Dogs

We love our pets, but they’re often the cause of a lot of landscaping damage. Whether that’s yellow patches on the lawn or digging up holes, pets can make yard work a bit harder to keep up on. With an artificial pet turf installation, your lawn will look green and damage-free all year long. Our pet turf system can also be beneficial to your pets. Artificial turf for pets means no insects to worry about and extra cushion that can be helpful for older joints and exposed areas of skin or paw pads.

No matter how much rain or snow we get, there won’t be any muddy paws to worry about. Cleaning pet turf is simple as it only requires an occasional rinse in the spring/ summer. Fake grass installation for dogs can help alleviate the problems that come with traditional grass backyards.

Antimicrobial Pet Turf Infill with Microban

Pet turf is free of the chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides that natural grass requires so your dog can use the space as much as they want without any concern about what they're rolling in or eating off the ground.

Every pet installation we build uses Envirofill infill with Microban antimicrobial technology built into the coating. Microban actively inhibits the bacterial growth that converts pet urine into ammonia odor, which is why properly installed pet turf stays fresh rather than developing the smell problems homeowners worry about.

Our pet turf backing is also fully permeable so liquid moves through the surface immediately rather than sitting on top. matters most in dedicated dog runs, where concentrated daily use puts significantly more drainage demand on the system than a general backyard installation. The spec we use for dog runs is built for that reality.

Third-party tested & certified

PFAS are synthetic chemicals that don't break down in the body or environment. They've been detected in some artificial turf products — and for a surface a dog lies on for hours a day, what it's made from matters. The turf we recommend for pet installations is manufactured using plant-based inputs, independently tested, and certified safe for children and pets.

Plant-based manufacturing
Soybeans and sugarcane replace petroleum-based chemicals used in conventional turf. Built into how the fiber is made — not a label applied after the fact.
Independent third-party testing
Certified safe for children and pets through external verification — not a self-reported manufacturer claim.
Manufactured PFAS-free
The plant-based backing system and fiber inputs replace the petroleum-based components where PFAS risks occur — covering the full product, not just the surface layer.
A question worth asking
When comparing quotes, ask directly: was that turf manufactured to be PFAS-free, or just not tested against that standard?

A pet install uses the same process as any turf job — excavation, base, weed barrier, turf, infill. But the spec at each layer is different. Most odor and drainage problems trace back to base material and infill choice, not the turf itself.

Clean drain rock — not minus
Road base "minus" contains fine particles that compact and restrict drainage over time. Clean drain rock — washed angular aggregate — keeps void space open under traffic so liquid moves through the profile.
Fully permeable backing
Standard turf backings resist water. Pet turf uses a hole-punched permeable backing — 30–40 drainage points per square foot — so liquid passes through the surface immediately.
Shorter pile, open yarn structure
Tall dense pile traps debris and holds odor. A shorter, open pile around 1.5″ with a thatch layer lets waste sit on top and rinse out cleanly.
Envirofill antimicrobial infill
Silica sand does nothing about bacteria. Envirofill has Microban technology built into the coating — inhibiting bacterial growth at the source, not masking it. Also runs cooler underfoot than dark silica.

Many turf companies sell the job and bring in subcontractors to build it. The crew on-site has no ongoing relationship with the company on your contract. We've run our own installation crews out of Tacoma since 2012 — the same people, the same standards, every job. Base prep and infill depth are the two things most likely to get rushed on a job site, and they determine how a yard performs years out.

Subcontracted model
Crew changes job to job
Base and infill decisions made by whoever shows up
Warranty routed through the seller, not the builder
How we work
Our own crews, consistent on every job
Same base and infill standards every time
We built it — we stand behind it directly

Pet Turf Drainage System

Dog turf needs to do one thing better than anything else, stay clean and drain quickly.. That's why we install fully permeable turf with a specialized backing designed specifically for dog areas, allowing liquids to pass through far faster than standard turf systems. This rapid drainage helps prevent odor buildup and keeps the surface from becoming muddy or saturated, even with daily use.

Beneath the turf, we build a drainage base that moves moisture away from the surface so your yard stays sanitary and easy to rinse clean. Artificial grass installed for dogs is the ultimate muddy paw solution.

Fake Grass For Dogs

Fake Grass For Dogs

Pet turf should be easy to keep clean. We recommend turf with a slightly shorter pile height for dog areas because it allows debris to sit on top instead of getting trapped down in the fibers. That makes rinsing, waste removal, and general cleanup simple and quick.

The result is a yard that stays cleaner for your pets and cleaner floors inside your home after they come back in.

Background for testimonial
  • Though upfront costs may seem higher, pet turf pays off in the long run. We expect most projects to last 15–20 years or more. Use our pet turf installation calculator to find out ROI and potential costs for your specific yard.

  • Yes — and in many ways, it's safer than natural grass. Modern pet turf is manufactured without lead or harmful chemicals and is tested to meet safety standards for both pets and children. Even in our mild Pacific Northwest climate, turf can get warm on sunny summer days. We select materials specifically for cooler surface temperatures — lighter colored blades, wider blade shapes, and infills that don't trap heat.

  • The process starts the same — removing existing turf, capping sprinklers, grading the base, and compacting 4 inches of road base. The key difference is the pet-specific infill: an antibacterial sand like Envirofill or a deodorizing blend applied at the correct depth to manage bacteria and keep surface temperatures in check.

Every Synthetic Turf of Puget Sound pet installation is done by our own crew, not subcontractors. That matters because drainage and infill depth are the two things most often rushed on a job site.

  • Yes — a properly installed pet system handles pet relief well. The key phrase is properly installed. We've seen yards installed with inadequate drainage or the wrong infill where the homeowner is dealing with persistent odors within a year. Our fully permeable backing and graded drainage base are engineered specifically to prevent that.

  • A strong flush of water combined with a pet-safe sanitizer handles most day-to-day use. We recommend enzyme-based cleaners or Wysiwash for consistent results.

    • Brush before rinsing — loosens compacted infill so cleanser reaches the base, not just the blades
    • Designate a corner — training pets to one area dramatically reduces your cleaning zone
    • Stubborn odor — a 50/50 white vinegar and water mix applied directly works well
    • Automated wash systems are available for high-use runs if you want a hands-off setup

See our full pet turf cleaning and maintenance guide for step-by-step detail.

  • All artificial turf absorbs more heat than natural grass — that's the straightforward answer. In the Pacific Northwest, this is less of a daily concern than in hotter climates, but it's real on sunny summer days, particularly in dog runs along south-facing fences or concrete-heavy spaces.

What affects surface temperature most is blade color, blade shape, infill type, and pile density. Lighter, wider blades with space between them release heat faster. We won't recommend materials that create uncomfortable or unsafe surface temperatures for your dogs.

  • We evaluate every pet material against three priorities: washability, surface temperature, and long-term durability under heavy traffic.

    • Washability first — antimicrobial technology built into the fiber, not a surface coating that wears off over time
    • Temperature — lighter-toned, lower-pile, wider-blade options paired with antibacterial infill rather than colored silica sand
    • Durability — holds up to digging, sprinting, and constant use without matting or losing drainage performance

We monitor real-world performance across South Puget Sound yards and update our recommendations regularly. If something isn't performing in the field, we stop using it.
