General Cost of Turf Installed
Installed artificial turf in the Tacoma and greater Puget Sound area typically runs $11 to $16 per square foot for residential lawn installations, all-in. That means excavation, base prep, weed barrier, turf material, infill, perimeter securing, and cleanup. Not just the material cost.
Putting greens and specialty installations run higher. We break each project type down in detail below.
The single biggest variable isn't the turf itself, it's the site conditions. A straightforward backyard with good equipment access and flat ground will always come in at the lower end of any range. A front yard with driveway access to the worksite is even better. A steep slope, narrow gate with multiple steps or drainage challenge adds to the fake grass cost regardless of what type of turf you're installing.
Site Factors and Additional Pricing Considerations
Access
Equipment access is one of the most consistent cost variables we see. A 36-inch minimum gate width allows mini skid steer access, which reduces labor time for material removal and base delivery. Do you have stairs that look like this photo, this could add cost to the project. Additionally very narrow side yards, steep slopes, or long carry distances require hand labor throughout and add $1 to $2 per square foot or more to any project type.
If you're not sure whether your access qualifies as challenging, take a photo of your gate and the path to the installation area and include it with your estimate request. We'll tell you honestly.
Drainage in the Pacific Northwest
Every install includes 4 inches of compacted road base graded for drainage. Projects with identified drainage issues (low spots, clay-heavy soil, areas that currently pond) may require additional drainage or excavation depth work before turf is installed.
Soil conditions
Much of Pierce County sits on glacial till: a dense, compacted mix of clay, silt, and rock left by glacial movement. Glacial till excavates harder than standard soil, which affects labor time on larger projects. It also drains slowly on its own, which reinforces the importance of proper base preparation rather than relying on native soil to do drainage work it isn't capable of.
Existing material removal
Sod removal is included in our quotes. Concrete demolition and removal is not. If your project requires breaking out an existing concrete slab before installation, that's scoped and priced separately. Installs over existing concrete that stays in place don't require demolition and are typically simpler to price.
Artificial Turf for Dogs Cost
Pet turf starts at the same base rate as residential lawn $11-$16 per square foot. Where pet installs can diverge from standard lawn installs:
Drainage base material. Standard installs use road base "minus," a mix of crushed rock and fine particles that compacts well and is cost-effective. Pet installs use clean drain rock: washed angular aggregate with no fine particles. The difference matters because fine particles compact under traffic and restrict drainage over time. Clean rock maintains void space so liquid moves through the profile efficiently year after year. It costs slightly more per ton but is the correct spec for any area with concentrated pet use.
Air Drain Geocell: when it applies
For commercial pet environments (doggy daycares, kennels, boarding facilities) or residential installs where drainage demand is especially high, we install Air Drain Geocell beneath the turf. This drainage mat creates an elevated, ventilated layer above the base for liquid to pass through.
Air Drain Geocell generally adds $2 to $3 per square foot to the installed cost.
Backyard Putting Green Installation Cost
Putting greens are priced differently from lawn installations and don't follow the same size tiers. The work is more involved: contouring, fringe turf, cup and flag installation, and custom shaping. The material is NP50 nylon putting green turf rather than polyethylene landscape turf.
Putting greens are quoted individually after a site visit. Square footage alone doesn't capture what the project actually involves.
Playground Turf Cost
Playground installations use the same base rate as residential lawn, adding playground pad will change the cost based on the fall height requirements of your equipment.
| Pad Specification | Additional Cost |
|---|---|
| No pad (ground-level play areas) | Base rate only |
| Light pad 4' fall height | +$1 per sf |
| Standard pad 6' fall height | +$2 per sf |
| Higher fall height requirement 9' or higher | +$3-4 per sf |
IPEMA certification and ASTM fall ratings determine which pad specification your equipment requires. We assess this during the site visit. The equipment manufacturer's spec sheet tells us which pad tier is appropriate.
Is Artificial Grass in the Northwest Worth the Cost?
The PNW case for turf is stronger than in most markets and the math usually reflects it. If artificial turf feels expensive upfront, the comparison that matters is 15-year cost, not day one cost
Lawn service in the Tacoma area runs $750 or more per year for a maintained yard. Add Tacoma Public Utilities water costs for irrigation from May through September, fertilizer, weed control, and the moss treatments that are essentially mandatory in our climate, and a maintained natural grass yard costs $1,500 to $2,000 or more per year to keep looking reasonable.
Over 15 years, that's $22,000 to $30,000 in ongoing costs to keep a natural lawn, not counting your time spent on the weekends.
Most residential turf installations break even between years six and nine, then accumulate savings for the remainder of the 15-year warranty period. Use the calculator below to see a 15-year comparison specific to your project size.
What to Ask When Getting Quotes
What does your quote include?
Every quote covers the full installation from start to finish: excavation and removal of existing material, 4 inches of compacted road base (clean drain rock on pet installs), weed barrier, turf material, Envirofill antimicrobial infill, all seaming and perimeter work, and cleanup. There are no line items billed separately after the fact. The number we give you is the number.
Why are some turf quotes significantly lower than others?
The savings usually come from one of four places, and none of them are visible once the turf is down:
- Shallow base. Some installers quote 2 inches of base rather than 4. It looks identical on day one and performs very differently after two wet seasons. Ask any installer directly: how deep is the base and what material?
- Cheaper infill. Standard silica sand costs less than Envirofill. On a pet install, it also does nothing about odor. If a quote does not specify antimicrobial infill, it probably is not using it.
- Imported turf. Products made overseas are generally less expensive to purchase and the quality reflects that. Ask where the turf is manufactured.
- Subcontracted crews. A broker or company using subcontractors is difficult to evaluate because the person quoting the job is not the crew building it. Base prep depth and infill application are the two things most likely to get cut on a job site, and they are invisible once the turf is laid.
Is the quote I receive an exact price or an estimate?
The ranges on this page are planning numbers. Once we see your property and confirm access, drainage, and layout, we give you an exact number. Nothing changes between that number and your final invoice unless you add additional space.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Site visits are free and come with no obligation. We also offer satellite estimates using aerial imaging of your property if you want a cost range before scheduling a visit. Request yours here.
