How to Install Artificial Grass: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Remove Existing Materials

Start by clearing the area. This involves removing organic soil, weeds, and any other materials above ground. For this step we like to use either a mini skid steer, sod cutter or excavator. Most artificial grass installations should be excavated to a depth of 3-6 inches. Ground protection mats laid over existing grass can be helpful in reducing damage to the existing landscape during this process.

Step 2: Cap Sprinklers

If your property has sprinklers that won’t be used, cap them. This simple step protects your artificial turf from potential water damage. If necessary, modify existing irrigation systems and add drainage solutions to keep water flowing properly. Keeping certain existing sprinkler heads on pet turf installations can be helpful for occasional rinsing and maintenance.

Step 3: Adjust Utilities and Drainage

Relocate sprinklers, adjust irrigation lines, and install drainage as needed. Backfill and mark unused sprinklers to avoid low spots or uneven surfaces. Move wiring and utilities inward, 6-8 inches from hardscapes or edges, to prevent accidental damage when securing the turf. Secure wires with u-nails on the subgrade surface.

Step 4: Artifical Grass Landscape Fabric

Lay out a commercial grade non-woven landscape fabric over the existing soil. This fabric can help prevent weed growth into the artificial turf sub-base. Landscape fabric also acts as a soil/ base separator.

Step 5: Build the Base

Artificial turf base material, typically a mix of gravel and fines, is crucial for proper drainage. Install a minimum of 3 inches of base material, ensuring even distribution and sloping it away from living areas towards drainage points. Wet the base to aid settling and compact it in 2-inch layers using a plate compactor and hand tamp around the perimeter.

Step 6: Trim and Secure the Turf

Cut the turf to fit the area, leaving an extra inch along the edges for tucking. Overcutting (and slightly over ordering) ensures you have enough material for adjustments. Use 6 inch galvanized turf nails every 4-6 inches along the edges. Separating the turf blades while nailing can help to prevent dimpling. See our guide for creating synthetic turf seams here.

Step 7: Add Infill and Groom

Use a power brush to lift the grass blades, preparing the turf for infill. Spread envirofill sand or an anti-bacterial infill evenly across the surface. This adds weight, keeps the blades upright, and improves the turf’s stability. Finish by lightly power brushing the surface to settle the infill and remove debris.
